The sole survivor of a space crash, Charlie Evans grew up alone from the age of three until seventeen, when Starfleet showed up to rescue him and ruin his life.
Charlie has a large forehead and he’s not afraid to use it. By contorting his face into an expression that suggests he’s been interfered with, he can control objects, making them appear and disappear at will. Imagine Santa Claus, if he were to replace elves with advanced forehead technology.
However, Chuck has problems. Because of his hermit-like upbringing, he’s never developed social skills and has never even met a female. So when he first meets Yeoman Janice Rand he needs Kirk to confirm that she is, in fact, a girl. Why yes Charlie, that is a girl. That’s a space girl. Welsh-born singer Jemma Griffiths, better known as Jem performs “They” in a video paying tribute to the opening sequence of Barbarella. With high production values and a modern feel, Jem undresses in zero-gravity to the haunting music of the track. “They” was the first single released by Jem from her debut album Finally Woken
When it came to shooting the video, I picture the production team sitting around a table discussing what to film. Do they shoot the singer moodily walking though dimly lit streets pulling clenched fists across her face to emote her artistic vision, or do they launch her into space and break out the cameras while she gets her kit off? Hmm… what to choose… Yes they went for the saucier choice, but it is the choice of the future!
