Oops!

It was only when I stopped by to read his comic in early December and saw another artist’s guest strip that it jogged my memory.  I promptly wrote and coloured a strip and submitted it to Roland, as promised.

Tiffany and I arrived early at Savilles Hall armed with Girls in Space books, Silly Beggar books, some home-made comics, a heap of postcards, some VW Bus toys, oodles of badges and some sketchcards.  With no idea whether this amounted to too much stock or not enough, we set up at table number 48.  Our display included a TV set showing an animated sequence of the Girls in Space logo flying through space, followed by the Bus flying through space.

The room was very large and held around 200 tables, by my reckoning.  Our table was on the edge of the room with a wall behind us and we were in the middle of the row.  In order to get out from behind the table, we would have to squeeze past several others, and there wasn’t much room between table and wall.

However, the squeezing past aspect was soon rendered academic as the people at the gap blocked it with boxes full of comics, which would be impossible to move.  Luckily there was no fire, so we all survived. Bonus.

In fact the only way out was to crawl under the table – not an ideal situation, especially for my pregnant wife.

Negatives aside, the con had been well-promoted.  I was told that by the time the doors opened the queue was a quarter of a mile long.  Soon, hordes of comic fans came through the doors, many of them dressed in weird, wonderful and, sometimes quite skimpy, outfits! I’m not certain my eyes will ever recover from one particular Spider-man costume.

By the end of the day, I felt as if I had spoken to everyone!

The majority of visitors were there to see the big names the event had invited, and only a select few had heard of my humble webcomic, but it warmed my heart that some had heard of my work (although admittedly more had heard of Silly Beggar than Girls in Space).  Many of the people I spoke to seemed to like the idea of the comic and said they would check it out online.  I even sold a few comics and books, which helped me to cover my costs.

I enjoyed getting a chance to talk to other creators and people in the comics industry.  It was great to meet my podcast buddy Luke Surl.  My table neighbours were Nigel, who bought and sold original comic pages and, Peter Roy cartoonist behind the webcomic Twisted Peel.  Peter and I had a good chat about webcomics and I learned a lot from him about iPhone apps.

All in all, it was a brilliant learning opportunity and I had a lot of fun on the day.  Next time, I’m going dressed as the Hulk!
