Push The Button (Page 09)

Up until this page, everything in the story has taken place on the same day. Today, we start to move forward in time.  In terms of my drawing, I am so happy to be able to (finally) change Red’s outfit.  I was starting to dread every appearance of her purple and white stripey stockings.  What the space-heck was I thinking?

When I colour the characters’ skin tones, I normally use a lighter version of the skin tone for highlights. However, in the bath scene of panel 1, I used white to suggest Red’s skin was wet.  I’m noting this here for future me’s benefit should there be any more wet girls in the future.

Today’s page features the so-far unnamed blue cat.  This character design was based on the cats in my former webcomic The Cat Comic.  Feel free to give it a read!

My traffic seems to have gone up with today’s page. Can’t think why. :/

I imagine that I’m in the minority here, but this kind of overt pandering doesn’t sit quite right with me. Feels cheap.

The comic is great otherwise, though! I wouldn’t have read up to here if it weren’t! (Please don’t track me down and put my head on a pike!)

Thanks for your comment, I do appreciate all feedback and I am sorry to hear that you weren’t entirely satisfied with this particular page.

In response, I should say that Girls in Space is influenced by my favourite science fiction television shows, movies and comics, and though I do like modern sci-fi, I truly love retro science fiction such as sixties Star Trek, classic Dr Who and movies like Barbarella. Girls in Space is a kind-of tribute to classic sci-fi spacegirls. Unlike modern sci-fi which seems to present every female character as an action hero with attitude, the sixties characters like Barbarella, Uhura and many of the Doctor’s companions were more feminine and were very likeable, even if their roles were under-used, often simply being included for the male characters to rescue. My intention with Girls in Space is to present the girls in a way similar to how female characters are presented in classic sci-fi, but without the male characters around to intervene. That’s the philosophy of the comic. In order to present the characters the way I want to, I will show off their curves every once in a while.

I would like to reassure you however, that Girls in Space will never have porn in it, or anything too racy (certainly nothing worse than you would see in a sixties Carry On film), and I hope this will not put you off continuing to read the girls adventures. Thank you once again for your comment.

Nudity in a comic isn’t really an issue for me, if its done in a context where people would be naked anyway, such as in a bath. Plus, Red having a bath a good excuse for the change of outfit.

    • Spencey

Thanks Jimmy. I saw this scene as a way of demonstrating that time had moved on and, as you said, to explain Red’s new outfit. I also thoroughly enjoyed drawing it! :)

Soap never sticks to ME like that….

    • Spencey

It’s a space thing. Yup. Definitely a space thing.

Is it me, or is http://www.thecatcomic.com/ down?

And, by the way, don’t be too prude to show off the girls!

    • Spencey

Hi Daniel, thanks for the comment. The Cat Comic is indeed down. I decided to take it off-line for the time being while I decide what to do with it. I lost all the hi-res images in January but I’m considering doing something to try and re-create them, but I didn’t want the original low-res versions up while I’m experimenting.

yes, more wet girls MORE WET GIRLS MANY MANY MORE WET GIRLS.
maybe I should take my pills now…

    • Spencey

Don’t take the pills! At least, not unless you’ve brought enough for everyone :)

    So… I’m still stuck on the first panel… ;)
