The Prototype (Page 04)

Today’s update introduces the Orb.  Is is a computer?  Is it a life form?  Is it a floating bowling ball?  There’s no need to decide!  We also learn the name of one of the girls – Zoe.  Also, if you were concerned that the broken screen in the previous page would kill them – fear not!  A protective emergency shutter has descended.  Phew!

It pains me greatly to tell you this, but something unspeakable has happened to me in real life. My iMac has died. Believe me when I say that this is a complete disaster, especially when it comes to producing Girls in Space and The Cat Comic. The computer has been taken for repair in Edinburgh and it looks like it is a hard disk failure (meaning I have most likely lost data). I did have some things backed up but sadly not my most recent files, ie most of the hi-res versions of Girls in Space. I’ll have to wait and find out the full extent of the loss and whether the files can be retrieved from my hard disk. Fortunately, because I work quite far in advance, I had the low-res pages for the rest of January uploaded and scheduled, so January’s story will continue even without my Mac. With luck, I may get it back in time to let me produce February’s strips without interruption. Fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed, dude. A sick computer, whether it’s a Mac or PC, is a sad, sad thing.

Thanks mate. I know you have recently gone through this too. Curse of the spacecomics?

hehe, good luck with those primitives :)

(My new puppy’s name is Zoe) :)

I like the name. Couldn’t decide whether to put the accent over the e that some Zoe’s use. In the end, it seemed like too much hassle every time I wanted to use her name!

I love the Red Dwarf style damage report

I know this was back in Jan, but I use dropbox to protect my most recent files and character models (I use blender to make my strip). If dropbox is available outside the US, it’s a life-saver!

Thanks for the tip. In the end when I got the Mac back I installed Snow Leopard which has “Time Machine”. It automatically backs up my work. Nice!

Auto-backups are the only way to go if you want to be sure you’ll have it your data when a real crisis strikes.

Unfortunately it’s a lesson I learned the hard way, but at least I didn’t lose too much!

You know if I had read this sooner then I would have suggested doing a system restore to a date before your machine died on you, of course it still might not have been possible but worth a try… Of course I would imagine that you already knew about that idea so no problemo as they say… I like how your comic strip is progressing, it is very good my friend :)
